Exceptional Antique Carved Stone Bust of Vishnu Mounted On a Wooden Base. Ca. 5th-7th Century AD. An ancient carved stone sculpture depicting Vishnu, wearing drapery and his characteristic conical headdress. The fragmentary carved stone figure is presented from the knees up. The head of the figure is surmounted with a fabulous Mandorla surrounding the headdress.
The figure has a well carved face with impressive details including the figure's ear hangings and necklace with sash across the chest. Carving to the back appears to indicate that this was likely mounted to a wall in its history but is currently displayed mounted on a wood base.
Vishnu is one of the most important gods in the Hindu pantheon. He is considered a member of the holy trinity (trimurti) of Hinduism with Brahma and Shiva. Vishnu is the Preserver and guardian of men, he protects the order of things (dharma), and he appears on earth in various incarnations (avatars) to fight demons and to maintain cosmic harmony.
