Item Description

"Remington Arms, Tool Room, 1941" by Milton Bond (American, 1918-2010) was a privately commissioned masterpiece, truly unique in its grandeur. The meticulously painted reverse glass painting in oil is definitively larger than the majority of the artist's known works and represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire an important painting by the artist.

Milton Bond was primarily a self-taught artist and Connecticut native, born in Stratford, CT and went on to work for 30 years at Remington Arms in Bridgeport, CT. Following his tenure at Remington Arms in the 1960's, Bond began to build his artistic ouevre, focusing on striking reverse glass paintings in oil. Bond's primary subject matter included rural and urban landscapes often with figures. Bond also painted nautical and coastal scenes depicting ships at sea or in port, a reference to his experience growing up and living in coastal Connecticut along with traveling up and down the American east coast.

Reverse painting on glass is an ancient technique, tracing its roots back to the middle ages. Reverse painting on glass refers to the application of paint directly onto glass, painted in mirror image, such that when reversed the image is viewed through the glass. As the paint adheres directly to the glass, the images retain a distinctive luminosity and depth through layers of applied paint.

"Remington Arms, Tool Room, 1941" depicts the Tool Room at Remington Arms, in 1941, during Bond's tenure at the Bridgeport based company. The reverse glass painting is a shining example of Bond's artistic talent and broad palette to vividly capture a moment in time. The painting majestically depicts the architectural interior of Remington Arms Tool Room, with its fleury of work day activity by the many tradesman along with architectural details such as the rows of arched windows allowing light to enter the space.

The painting is signed and dated lower right and additionally signed and dated on verso.
The painting is presented within a carved and finished wooden frame, with interior gilt trim. A brass placard with the title and date is mounted to the frame in lower center.

Provenance: Privately commissioned for a private collection.
